
What is osteoporosis?
Low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue increasing the risk of fractures
What are the facts?
2.3 million Canadians are living with osteoporosis
Loss of bone starts in the mid-30s
Women are 4x more likely to have osteoporosis
Over 80% of fractures in people over 50 years of age are caused by osteoporosis
What can slow down the process?
Nutrition – key component for strong and healthy bones
Physical activity – protects bones, slows rate of bone loss, builds muscle strength
When to monitor?
Those over 50 years of age should have height measured annually
Loss of 2cm or more is significant and can be a warning sign of possible fracture
Who requires a bone mineral density scan?
Over 65 years of age, both men and women
Under 65 years of age depends on risk factors
What is the treatment?
Weight bearing balance and strengthening exercise
Prevention of falls
Smoking cessation
Vitamin C through a healthy diet and vitamin D supplementation
Pharmacological “treatment”

Retest BMD every 1-3 years
Retest Vitamin 3 after 3-4 months of adequate supplementation
