Osteoporosis

What is osteoporosis?

Low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue increasing the risk of fractures

What are the facts?

2.3 million Canadians are living with osteoporosis

Loss of bone starts in the mid-30s

Women are 4x more likely to have osteoporosis

Over 80% of fractures in people over 50 years of age are caused by osteoporosis

What can slow down the process?

Nutrition – key component for strong and healthy bones

Physical activity – protects bones, slows rate of bone loss, builds muscle strength

When to monitor?

Those over 50 years of age should have height measured annually

Loss of 2cm or more is significant and can be a warning sign of possible fracture

Who requires a bone mineral density scan?

Over 65 years of age, both men and women

Under 65 years of age depends on risk factors

What is the treatment?

Weight bearing balance and strengthening exercise

Prevention of falls

Smoking cessation

Vitamin C through a healthy diet and vitamin D supplementation

Pharmacological “treatment”

What’s next?

Retest BMD every 1-3 years

Retest Vitamin 3 after 3-4 months of adequate supplementation

What can you do to prevent falls that can cause a fracture?

Clear clutter

Light the way

Modify for mobility

Consider smart devices like voice activitated devices
